Before you shoot yourself in the foot with another get-thin-quick diet (they also tout the biggest failure rates), you might be surprised to find that something as simple as eating watermelon is all it takes to drop a pants size!
There are three magic ingredients for weight loss: protein, water, and fiber. Any or all of these fill you up on few calories, so you push away from the table before you over-do it. Watermelon has two of the three, fiber and water. It makes a great snack, especially when combined with a food that contains that third ingredient, protein. So, curb your cravings and help slim your waistline with a mid-morning or mid-afternoon snack of watermelon chunks and low-fat yogurt or an ounce of nuts.
Keep in mind that while you cut calories, you don’t want to sacrifice your health by cutting vitamins and minerals. That means making every bite count. Any good diet should emphasize colorful fruits and vegetables, and whole grains, with moderate amounts of calcium-rich (nonfat milk) and iron-rich (extra-lean meats, chicken, fish, or legumes) foods. For example, a bowlful of watermelon supplies a wealth of vitamins, such as vitamins A and C, and minerals such as potassium, for few calories. Even the best diet can’t guarantee optimal intake of all nutrients when it drops below 2,000 calories. So, consider taking a moderate-dose, well-balanced vitamin and mineral supplement, too.
